Former Education Minister Dr. Brendan Nelson and Father Chris Riley Launch National MathsPOWER Challenge
Stressing the
importance of projects to assist children to improve their numeracy skills, Dr
Brendan Nelson and Father Chris Riley founder of the "Youth Off The Streets"
program press the button, to formally launch the National MathsPOWER
Challenge.
"I strongly support what Maths POWER is trying to achieve for our young people...
because what really counts first and foremost is young people. In the end these programs transform their lives.
It is so important that we have tutorial programs and other assistance available for our young people, Maths POWER
being one important part, that are able to help the students themselves and indeed their families"
The National MathsPOWER Challenge is a 12 month Australia-wide research
project, designed to analyse the impact that parental involvement has on
improving their childrens education through the use of computer software*.
*Preliminary studies show that appropriate parental involvement through the use
of their own efforts, or through the use of appropriate resources can enhance a
student's exam results by as much as 50%.
